Information and tasks related to the foundation of a European chapter of IALE: The European Association for Landscape Ecology (IALE-Europe)
In the IALE Bulletin Vol. 27 no. 2, to be distributed around in the end of April 2009, there will be a lot of information on the upcoming IALE Chapter European Association for Landscape Ecology (IALE-Europe), to be founded 13th July in Salzburg.
The most important general information is to be found in the enclosed statutes for IALE-Europe and the presentation paper. Go to Presentation or download PDF file: Setting the scene. The Specificity of Landscape Ecology in Europe in the 21th century.
The goal of IALE-Europe is to coordinate the common interests of landscape ecologists at a European level. IALE-Europe will not replace the existing European chapters of IALE, quite the opposite: The chapter will support the existing European national chapters as well as individual European members of IALE at a variety of fields where landscape ecological theory, methods, practise and education are or needs to be coordinated at a European level to support the development of European landscapes. IALE-Europe will also stimulate the foundation of new national, sub-national or cross-national chapters of IALE-Europe that can promote the solution of landscape ecological problems tied to specific European landscapes.
During the last 5 years, European members of IALE have been working on the formation of the new European chapter. In the preparation we have aimed at developing a strong but flexible structure and concentrated on the establishment of permanent relations to the European Commission and related organisation, as well as to the European Council, with the intention to give the members a direct access to a variety of activities at the European level where landscapes and their planning and management play an important role. Also educational matters as well as a stronger organisation of landscape ecologist engaged in practical planning and management through consultancy is on the agenda of IALE-Europe.
A strong link between the national chapters of IALE within Europe and IALE-Europe is expected, and we will ask you to be engaged already now concerning the following matters.
Membership: All members of IALE International can be a member of IALE-Europe. The membership fee IALE-Europe in 2009 will be free, but members have to register at the membership form at the site Become member. The membership fee for 2010 will be decided upon by the Executive Committee of E-IALE, to be elected after the foundation meeting in July. European IALE chapters can also decide to offer their members an additional membership of IALE-Europe, provided that the regional membership also comprises a membership of IALE International. In this case, the regional chapter collect a common yearly fee for IALE International, the regional chapter and IALE-Europe-Europe and transfer the IALE-Europe and IALE-fees yearly for all members together with the updated membership information. Please inform us, if your chapter wants to establish a collective membership for all members of the regional chapter, so that we can announce it on the web-page to prevent your members to ask for a membership that will be established automatically. Also the collective IALE-Europe-Europe-membership fee for your national chapter will be free for 2009.
Representative in the IALE Council: IALE-Europe is not an umbrella for European IALE-chapters, but structured as a normal chapter of IALE that is a regional (super-national, national, sub-national or cross-national) organisation of individual members of IALE-International. Every chapter, formalised according to the IALE statutes, have a representative in the IALE Council. The IALE-Europe Representative will be elected at the IALE-Europe General Assembly, in 2009 as a part of the foundation meeting in Salzburg. If a member of your regional chapter wants to nominate for the representative of IALE-Europe in the IALE Council, a nomination shall be made by two registrered members of IALE-Europe. The IALE-Europe Representative in the IALE Ciuncil should not at the same time nominate for the Executive Committee of IALE-Europe.
The IALE-Europe nomination committee: The IALE-Europe nomination committee organises and supervises the election of the IALE-Europe Executive Committee. It consist of three members of the IALE Council, of whom the chair is the IALE-Europe representative in the Council, the two others members elected by and among the representatives in the Council for European chapters of IALE (expect IALE-Europe). If you want to nominate your representative in the IALE Council for a seat in the IALE-Europe nomination committee, you should inform the chair of the council so that it can be included in the approval process of IALE-Europe in the IALE Council.
The IALE-Europe Executive committee: The IALE-Europe Executive Committee will consist of at least 4 members. The activities of the first E.C. will be crucial for the development of European landscape ecology. Therefore the European chapters of IALE are invited to cooperate actively with other chapters and be involved in the development of the activities of IALE-Europe and the formulation of tasks and goals for the new organisation. In the initial phase of the new organisation an important task is to formulate visions and programs for the upcoming Executive Committee. Therefore the members are invited to form election lists with a programme and candidates for the list.
Looking forward for an inspiring foundation meeting – and a great fun!On behalf of the organising group
